Switching from Shared or Dedicated hosting
You can switch to a VPS from a Shared, Reseller, or Dedicated Server by purchasing a new VPS hosting, transferring your files, changing DNS, waiting 48 hours for propagation, and, finally, canceling the old plan. We can also migrate your content for you. Please submit a migration request via your Customer Portal. Please see the article HostGator Website Transfers for more information.
Switching from a different level of VPS We have instructions in the following articles for how to upgrade or downgrade between different VPS levels:
- Upgrade My Hosting Account
- Downgrade My Hosting Account
Please contact us via phone or chat to modify settings while remaining on the same level of VPS. If you add cPanel to your VPS, we will leave the old container active to transfer files to the new container. You must cancel the old container when you finish the transfer process.
How do I purchase a VPS? You can purchase a VPS here. For VPS plans, HostGator offers a billing cycle of 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year.
Where do I start? After purchasing your VPS plan, log in to SSH or cPanel to get started. If you are unfamiliar with SSH, you may want to consider upgrading to a higher-level VPS account with cPanel. We will be glad to guide you through getting started with cPanel installed on your VPS. The steps are very similar to our Reseller Startup Guide.
